Thomas will present his lecture “Did Dinosaurs Have Red Feathers?” at 2 p.m. May 23 at the Bruce Museum, 1 Museum Drive, Greenwich.
The Massey (New Zealand) University professor’s research delves into myriad color creation strategies of animals ranging from the yellow-eyed penguin to tyrannosaurus rex.
“We all appreciate the dazzling display of colors of living birds,” said Daniel Ksepka, curator of science at the Bruce Museum, in a statement. “But not many people know that dinosaurs also wore cloaks of feathers.”
For centuries, there was no way to reconstruct the hues of fossil fur and feathers. Now, new methods are rapidly taking shape, revealing colors and patterns in fossils from millions of years ago, said Ksepka.
The lecture is free for museum members and $15 for non-members. Advance reservations are requested. Contact the Bruce Museum by email at info@brucemuseum.org or phone at 203-413-6757 for more information and reservations.
